Architectural Tour Of Hyde Park Campus

Whether you attended Booth full-time on campus in Hyde Park or part-time at the Gleacher Center, you are sure to learn something new about the University of Chicago!  Nicknamed the "Grey City," the University was emerging simultaneously with and in close proximity to the the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition--the White City--on the south side of Chicago in the late 19th century. Sometimes considered Chicago's "twin progeny," these two "cities" were instrumental in changing the perception of Chicago from a city of barbarous materialism to one of refinement and culture.

Come explore the early Collegiate Gothic roots of the university campus in the original quadrangles, the “march of mid-century modernism” along the Midway and the recent, breath-taking architectural additions such as the Mansueto Library and the Midway Crossings. Explore buildings by such notable architects as Henry Ives Cobb, Eero Saarinen, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Helmut Jahn and many others.

The tour will start at the front entrance to the University Bookstore, 970 E. 58th Street (at the intersection of 58th and Ellis, on the west side of Ellis). Our tour guide will be Robin Simon, docent for the Chicago Architecture Foundation and UCWBG member.
